Oil spill effects on the environment

A 2014 study of the effects of the oil spill on bluefin tuna, published in the journal Science, clarifying the mechanics by which PAH kill fish, found that the toxins from oil spills can cause irregular heartbeats leading to cardiac arrest. It found that PAHs block signaling pathways that allow potassium and calcium ions to flow in and out of cardiac cell membranes and sustain normal heart rates, and that even very low concentrations of crude oil can disrupt these signaling pathways, slowing Oil spills have negative impacts on the residents of the affected areas. These effects can be aggravated by severe weather conditions. An example in this sense is the Murphy oil spill (due to the failure of a storage tank at the Murphy Oil USA refinery) that had particularly affected residential areas in Louisiana.

In general, oil spills can affect animals and plants in two ways: from the oil itself and from the response or cleanup operations. Understanding both types of impacts can help spill responders minimize overall impacts to ecological communities and help them to recover much more quickly. The spillage can arise from several sources including tankers, drilling rigs, offshore platforms, oil wells, and other sources. Oil spills are disastrous for the environment, to the economy, and to society in general. Effects of Oil Spills Effect on Water. The most apparent effect of oil spills is the impact they have on the water itself. Oil spills may impact the environment in the following ways: Physical smothering of organisms: This is caused by oils with a high viscosity, in other words heavy oils. Smothering will affect an organism’s physical ability to continue critical functions such as respiration, feeding and thermoregulation. Both the spill and the cleanup efforts had effects on the environment. The oil spill was called the "worst environmental disaster the US has faced" by White House energy adviser Carol Browner. The spill was by far the largest in US history, almost 20 times greater than the usual estimate of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. There are a number of ways oil effects the environment. Probably the most well-known and publicized is the effect on mammals and birds who are unlucky enough to be caught in the area of a spill. Oil sticks to hairy mammals such as seals and sea otters, and reduces their ability to insulate against the cold.

How Can Oil Spills Cause Damage to the Environment? The effects of an oil spill will depend on a variety of factors including, the quantity and type of oil spilled,
